2/26/2002 9:37 am ET Tiger notebook By Alan Eskew LAKELAND, Fla. -- Jeff Farnsworth, a Rule 5 draft pick, will start Wednesday night when the Detroit Tigers play Florida Southern in an exhibition game. Farnsworth went 11-10 with a 4.35 earned run average in 27 starts last season with Class AA San Antonio. "We're going to get to see him pitch a lot," Garner said. "We need to see him a few innings. He and (Joe) Valentine are both Rule 5 guys." The Tigers drafted both for $50,000 in December, but have to keep them on their 25-man roster all year or offer them back to the club they drafted them from for $25,000 if they clear waivers. Left-hander Jamie Walker and rookie right-hander Shane Heams are also scheduled to throw against the college team. Manager Phil Garner said he would likely use his regulars for two or three innings against Florida Southern.

Good pitching reports
Garner watched Mark Redman and Nate Cornejo, who are penciled in the Tigers' rotation, throw batting practice Monday and said both "threw good." "I didn't see (Matt) Miller threw, but they said he was outstanding," Garner said. "They also said Danny Patterson was outstanding." The pitchers, as usual, are ahead of the hitters during the early batting practice sessions. "It's hard for anyone to look good off the live pitchers," Garner said. "The guy who looks the best so far off live pitching is Shane Halter. Shane has busted a couple over the fence. Randall Simon looks good off of them because they (pitchers) will be a little erratic and he gets that bat going and he can whack them." The club was able to use all of their practice fields Monday after two days of constant rain Friday and Saturday. "Everything went well on the field," Garner said.

No intrasquad games
With the Tigers playing Florida Southern Wednesday, Pittsburgh Thursday and split-squad games Friday with Kansas City and the Pirates, Garner isn't planning an intrasquad game Tuesday. "I don't think you can get as much out of an intrasquad game as to what we're doing," Garner said
